Cataract

When the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract.  This cloudy lens can be removed surgically, and replaced with a clear artificial lens.  Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures done today.

Dr. Hofbauer has performed over ten thousand cataract surgeries.  He uses the modern “no-stitch” method, with a tiny incision that requires no sutures.   This method allows for rapid healing without the need to remove stitches, and also avoids the astigmatism that can be induced by a larger incision.

Before cataract surgery, your eyes will be measured for the artificial lens ( also known as an “intraocular lens implant” or “IOL”)

Our office uses the “IOLMaster
Ò” for eye measurements, which is the newest technology for calculating the lens power.

In many cases, Dr. Hofbauer can also reduce your need for eyeglasses after cataract surgery.  By careful selection of the IOL power, Dr. Hofbauer can aim for either distance or near vision without glasses.

There are several different options for those wishing to reduce their need for glasses during cataract surgery, and Dr. Hofbauer will discuss these options with you:

Distance Vision:  Your eye is focused in the distance without glasses, and you would put on reading glasses to see up close.

Near Vision:  Your eye is focused up close without glasses, and you would put on glasses to see in the distance.

Monovision:  One eye is focused for distance, and the other eye close up.  Many people choose this option and are very successful.  However, not every one can adjust to the difference in the two eyes.

Multi-focal IOL:  This is a new and exciting option that has recently become available.  This IOL allows for both distance and near vision, although neither one will be perfect and you may still need glasses in certain situations.  This is best for people who are highly motivated to avoid glasses.

Dr. Hofbauer will discuss your options at length, and help you choose the best selection.  There are many factors, including the health of your eyes and your visual needs that go into the decision.  Also remember that “distance vision” and “near vision” are goals, not guarantees.

Dr. Hofbauer is one of the most highly experienced cataract surgeons, and has special expertise in complex situations.  He can perform combined procedures for patients who also require glaucoma surgery or corneal transplants in addition to cataract surgery.

Please feel free to call the office for more information, or to schedule an appointment for evaluation.
