TECNIS MULTIFOCAL
The advanced TECNIS® Multifocal is an implantable lens that restores vision after cataract surgery and corrects presbyopia (the need for reading glasses). It delivers results superior to those of a standard monofocal lens and offers an excellent chance to become spectacle independent.
Using an advanced optical measuring system known as Wavefront technology, optical scientists scanned the eyes of a representative sample of the population. Using these measurements, optical engineers created a lens with a modified prolate surface to replicate the performance of the eye's natural lens.
The Tecnis Multifocal lens is similar in design to the ReStor, but there are a few slight differences. The Tecnis lens has its multifocal optic on the rear lens surface, whereas the ReStor lens has its multifocal on the front surface. There are very subtle differences in the ratio of near-, intermediate- and distance-focusing proportions of these lenses and in their edge design.
Clinical studies have shown that the Tecnis lens greatly improves distance, intermediate and near vision in a high majority of patients, whereas the ReStor greatly improves distance and close focus clarity, but improves clarity at the intermediate range at a lesser degree.
Any multifocal lens will cause some light scattering and glare due to the zones of different focus; this is unavoidable. All multifocal lens implants will create some glare and halo around point sources of light, especially at night, which is why their use is not highly recommended for pilots and commercial drivers.
